KARACHI: Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I Collector Farid Iqbal Qureshi on Saturday conducted the hearing into tax evasion case linked to M/s Warid Telecom.
The departmental representatives (DRs) of both the sides – M/s Warid Telecom and Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation – were present during the hearing.
The Customs Adjudication-I collector listened to the para-wise comments of both the parties and adjourned the hearing for an indefinite period.
It is pertinent to mention here that the authorities concerned of the Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I issued a show-cause notice (SCN) to M/s Warid Telecom for its alleged involvement in tax evasion of Rs 20 million in importation of telecommunication gadgets in the month of May.
The authorities concerns of the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation on secret information about the mis-declaration in M/s Warid Telecom’s imported consignments stopped the containers for examination.
During the examination, the customs authorities found that the M/s Warid Telecom had imported ASR 500-Multimedia Core Platform while applying the PCT 8471.5000 which attracting 1 percent customs duty, sales tax and income tax.
Further investigation revealed that the consignment, which was imported by M/s Warid Telecom, fell under PCT 8517.6290, which attracting 10 percent customs duty, sales tax and income tax.
Later, the authorities concerned of the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation found that the importer M/s Warid Telecom attempted to evade duty/taxes amounting to Rs 20 million on imported consignments.
Subsequently, the authorities concerned of the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation made a contravention report against the importer M/s Warid Telecom and forwarded it to the authorities concerned of the Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I for further legal proceedings.
Sources informed Customs Today that the Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I would conduct the next hearing into the case by the end of the current month.
