KARACHI: All the under training personnel should learn local and international Customs laws to successfully carry out their duties in the Customs Department. Zeba Azhar, Director Training, Directorate General of Training and Research (Customs), Karachi, said this while addressing the newly recruited appraising, valuation, preventive officers, inspectors, sepoys and intelligence officers, during one of the training sessions.
She said that their progress and performance directly depend on their ability to learn and apply the customs laws. The DGTR Customs Karachi has organized the on-job training programme for the biggest batch of customs officials in history of the country. All the personnel were recruited through Federal Public Service Commission, which include appraising officers, valuation officers, preventive officers, intelligence officers, inspectors and sepoys.
The one-month long theoretical training of sepoys was scheduled to be held from April 4 to May 5 whereas preventive officers, inspectors and intelligence officers are receiving two-month long theory training schedule from April 3 to June 2 whereas appraising officers and valuation officers will get similar theoretical training from April 3 to June 2.
In next step, sepoys are getting on job-attachment training, which is scheduled from May 8 to June 20 while the preventive officers, inspectors, intelligence officers, appraising officers and valuation officers will complete same course from June 5 to July 5.
Director Training Zeba Azhar mentioned that theoretical part of their training is essential as it brings them close to the laws and information regarding what subsidiaries, securities and facilities the government is offering to the importers and exporters.
She urged them to understand and learn basic principles of customs, valuation and importance of revenue besides many other important factors.
Zeba Azhar observed that it would be difficult for fresh recruited personnel to focus on all these important issues which is necessary to become valuable customs official. She advised them to utilise the newly-built state-of-the-art library which is located at DGTR Building.
She urged that the newly inducted people should take advantage of the library as they have easy access to books which will nourish and groom them professionally. Trainees will get lots of material on local customs laws as well as foreign customs.
Zeba Azhar informed them that they will find library hall named after legendary poetess late Parvin Shakir and only reason to honor her was the fact that she belonged to Customs, which was not known by majority of people.
