COLOMBO: A couple of Sri Lankan couple, who attempted to smuggle out a stock of gold worth over Rs 9.1 million to Mumbai, was arrested early this morning by the Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The Customs says the value of the stock of gold is around Rs. 91,183,850.
The business couple, residents of Maradana, had arrived at the Katunayake International Airport this morning to take a jet Airways flight to Mumbai departing at 5:45 am.
Upon inspection of their luggage at the airport the airport security officers found gold pieces weighing 2kg and 355g concealed in the luggage.
It is the first stock of gold that was seized at the airport after the government imposed a 15% tax on gold imports in order to curb gold smuggling to India.
