COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Customs Wednesday seized two containers containing stock of items imported to the country through illegal means. The illegal imports were valued at Rs. 120 million. The total tax due to be paid to the Customs is around Rs. 90 million, Customs officials said.
Customs Central Investigation Bureau inspected the two 40-foot two containers on suspicion at the Orugodawatta container yard. The containers have been brought to the country on 17th April. A private firm in Wattala had imported the two containers from Dubai through a ship. The importer however during investigation has denied that his firm was responsible for importing the items including electric bulbs, shoes, almonds, infant milk bottles and several other items. A senior Custom official told Rupavahini that several banned items have also been imported. The wharf clerk who was suspected to be involved in the racket has already left the island before the investigations, according to the official.
