Colombo : Some officers are of Sri Lanka Customs are opposing a proposed appointment of an ex-Navy officer as director general and are beginning industrial action, official sources said.
The cabinet of ministers had given the nod for the finance ministry to appoint Retired Rear Admiral Shermal Fernando as Director General of Customs.
Customs officers at some warehouses outside the port had walked out in protest.
Sri Lanka’s Colombo port does not clear goods after office hours, but it is no clear whether any action would be launched tomorrow morning during business hours.
It is a long standing practice to appoint a senior civil servant as director general of customs, and it is not common for career customs officers to be made its chief.
