SARGODHA: The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) Field Intelligence Unit (FIU) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 8690 kilogram apples worth more than Rs20,85,600. FIU also impounded Hino truck worth Rs 40,00,000 which was being used for smuggling purpose.
It is pertinent to mention here that Rs10,50,000 customs duty (CD) is imposed on import of foreign origin apples.
The anti-smuggling staff of Customs Intelligence received information that huge quantity of foreign origin apples were being smuggled. The anti-smuggling staff intercepted a Hino truck bearing registration no:TKS-764 near Jhal Chakian Khushab Road Sargodha which was coming from Peshawar side.
At the time of occurrence one Abdullah Jan son of Abdul Ahad was the driving the Hino truck. Apparently the said truck was loaded with Iranian origin apples. Thorough search of the truck was conducted in presence of witnesses and driver which led to the recovery of the 790 basket of foreign origin apples.
On demand the truck driver produced a different Goods Declaration (GD) issued by M/s Jiay Dastgeer Goods Transport Company New Fruit Market Hazar Gangi Quetta. During scrutiny of the above mentioned GD it was found tempered and bogus. Therefore anti-smuggling staff seized the Iranian apples along with truck under section 168 of the Customs Act 1969.
