COLOMBO: The police in Ramanathapuram have arrested a 50-years old man who tried to smuggle ganja to Sri Lanka through sea rout.
Acting on a tip off, a special police team, led by Sub Inspector of Police Sivasubramanian of Kovilankulam police station, conducted a search in the forest area between Othathevarkottai and Kanikkur and seized the contraband.
The accused, identified as T. Ramar alias Ramachandran (50), had hidden the ganja in 40 packets and kept it in five bags in the forest area for smuggling.
Enquiries revealed that the accused had received the ganja at Sayalkudi on December 4 from an unknown person, who hailed from Thondi.
Police arrested the accused under the provisions of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act. He was produced before a Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody.
