KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi extended physical remands of two accused ladies, Shamima Khatoon, w/o Mukhtar, and Shazia Ameer, w/o Shahid Ahmed, and sent them back to Customs Department’s lockup till April 04, 2017. They were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband foreign currency.
During the hearing, investigation officer produced above accused ladies before the court and informed the court that on credible information, on March 22, 2017, staff of the customs department intercepted them at the International Jinnah Airport Karachi. During the search of their baggages, the authorities recovered contraband foreign currency, including 71,000 Saudi Riyal and 26,500 UAE Dirham, from Shamima Khatoon’s possession and 49,500 Saudi Riyaal, 23,500 UAE Dirham and 500,000 Japanese Yen from the possession of Shazia Ameer.
During the investigation, they failed to produce any lawful documents therefore same currency was seized and ladies accused were taken into custody.
On March 22, 2017, same accused were produced before a judicial magistrate Malir who had granted their physical remands till March 27, 2017. The accused were again produced before the court for further physical remands because investigation had not been completed yet which was granted for collection of the concrete evidences.
According to the prosecution, separate cases were registered against them in violation of Section 2 (s) 16 and 139 of the Customs Act-1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & 70 of Section 156 (i) ibid read with notification of the State Bank of Pakistan.
