LAHORE: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has asked the non-filers to take benefit of the Voluntarily Tax Complaint Scheme (VTCS) and file their returns within the due date.
Official sources said that it was unlikely to extend the date for filing of returns, adding that the Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) has been made as the tax number and non-filers would not be able to deceive the tax collecting authority as their transactions would be detected through their CNICs.
The board is unlikely to extend the date and would start charging withholding tax at the rate of 0.6 percent besides serving non-compliance notices to the non-filers, a senior official in the board said.
The Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Regional Tax Offices (RTOs) in Lahore and Bhawalpur have received as many as 952 tax returns under the Voluntary Tax Compliance Scheme (VTCS) and collected tax of Rs 91.502 million by March 10, 2016.
According to FBR data, the Regional Tax Office Lahore received as many as 520 returns under VTCS and received tax of Rs 40 million till the date. The Regional Tax Office -II Lahore received 263 returns with tax amounting to Rs 28.540 million under the scheme.
Similarly, the RTO Bahawalpur received 169 returns and collected Rs 22.926 million. It is pertinent to mention here that FBR has set March 15 the last date for filing returns of tax for non-filers.
