Nigeria: Customs seizes 4 containers cleared by system hackers

LAGOS: The Port and Terminals Multi-Purpose Services Limited (PTML), command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has seized four containers laden with prohibited items just as it raked in a total of N33.8 billion for the second quarter of the year.

Customs Area Comptroller Tajudeen Olarewaju said the containers were falsely released by persons who hacked into the customs’ computer system using officers’ password.

According to him, “It is no longer news that one of our support pillars in the duty of revenue generation, Mearskline Shipping, withdrew its services for undisclosed reasons. The command has, however, redoubled its efforts to plug the loopholes caused by that action.

“Inspite of the situation the command generated a revenue of N33,836,998,293.00 in the first half of this year while in the corresponding period of 2012, a sum of N33,716,362,583.00 was generated indicating an increase of N120million.

During the period under review also, the command in the pursuit of its anti-smuggling duties had some consignment detained for various reasons.”

Besides, the four seized containers, six other vehicles were also seized due to violation of various import regulations.
