DHAKA: A man has been arrested at the Dhaka airport for smuggling gold worth an estimated Tk3.35 crore. Alam, 45, hailing from Comilla, flew in from Bahrain at 9am on Monday.
Customs officials, acting on a tip off, detained him at green channel. Alam vehemently denied smuggling gold during an initial interrogation but a scan of his luggage revealed 58 gold bars wrapped in a blanket.
The gold bars weighed 6.7kg, said Assistant Commissioner (Customs) Saidul Islam. Alam told the customs officials that he worked as a construction worker in Bahrain. He claimed to have received the blanket from his friend Haidar, who works at a cycle-repair workshop.
