BEIJING: Chinese vendor Lenovo, also the owner of Motorola, is now among the top five smartphone brands in India. In the bid to climb the ladder further, the company aims to double local production.
According to a report by The Economic Times, Lenovo aims to take the 2nd spot in India and is looking to almost double the local production to 10 million units annually by next year. The report also adds that Lenovo plans to export from its Chennai facility and will make more models in India.
The popular Moto Maker customisation programme could also make its way to India. “Initially, Moto Maker will allow users to customize the back panels of their smartphones. Larger scale at a local level will enable the company to get specialised customisation, down to the level of specialised RAM requirements or even screen size, to consumers in the future,” adds the report.
Earlier this year, Lenovo began assembling phones in Chennai via contract manufacturing partnership with Flextronics. It has also combined sales teams of Motorola and Lenovo.
Earlier this month, Lenovo had said it was committed to India in terms of investment in areas of manufacturing and research and development. “In three years, we have reached a revenue of $2.5 billion in India compared to a target of $800 million when we came to this country which is fast evolving in the area of technology,” Lenovo chairman and chief executive Yang Yuanqing had said.
