ISLAMABAD: Following termination of two judicial members, Appellate Tribunal Inland Revenue (ATIR) Chairman Javid Iqbal has contended that meritorious decisions were essential to improve court’s performance.
Talking to the Customs Today, the ATIR chairman said that numerous complaints were received against terminated members and their conduct was questioned time and again by the taxpayers.
ATIR Judicial Member Karachi Javed Zikria and Judicial Member Lahore Chaudhry Anwarul Haq were sacked following numerous complaints by colleagues and taxpayers regarding their conduct and inefficiency.
Haq was disobedient who used to challenge the chairman’s directives, saying that he had no powers to issue instructions to them, chairman complained.
Whereas, Javid Zikria had lied to the department about foreign trips, the appellate chairman said, adding that he was issued NOC for two countries while he visited more than that and later on submitted fake charge-assumption report.
He said the appellate had to take the decision of their termination in order to function smoothly. None of their colleagues was ready to work with them, the chairman said. The chairman also underscored that both officers were appointed by the Federal Public Service Commission and it was the first time ever since 1942.
“Decisions on merit are essential to be taken in order to improve ATIR performance”, the chairman contended.
However, according to reports, terminated members had approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC), challenging the notification of dismissal.
