CHENNAI: The relief materials sent from Malaysia to flood affected people of Chennai and Cuddalore districts which got stuck at the Tiruchi international airport for four days for want of documents was finally cleared by the Customs authorities here on Tuesday.
Officials cleared the materials, weighing 1.5 tonnes packed in 95 boxes, after obtaining a certificate issued by the Tiruchi District Collector K.S. Palanisamy.
They were sent by the People’s Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Malaysia, by the Tiruchi-bound Malindo Air flight from Kuala Lumpur and the consignment reached here on December 25.
The Foundation’s coordinator M. Prakash, a Malaysian national, who had come in advance to receive the consignment, could not get it cleared as it lacked proper supporting documents as sought by the Customs officials.
The consignment was carried by the airline as “rush bags” without the cover of any transport document including the airway bill.
