NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu Railway Police seized Rs.9 lakh-worth banned tobacco products at Tirunelveli Railway Junction.
When the banned tobacco products, packed in 90 bundles, were being unloaded Tirunelveli Railway Junction on Monday from the Nizamudin – Kanyakumari Express Train around 7 a.m., the railway police personnel checked the packs and seized them.
During investigation, the police found that a north Indian, now living in Tirunelveli Town, had purchased the banned tobacco products from Delhi to be sold in the district.
“When the north Indian trader had brought the same product from Delhi last time, it was seized. The officials, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Palayamkottai, G.S. Madhavan, also seized the banned product even as he had stocked it in a godown in Tirunelveli Town. Since there was no proof to connect the trader with the banned product, he managed to escape and was now continuing his business,” said a senior police officer.
The seized tobacco product was later handed over to the officials of Department of Food Safety for analysis.
