ISLAMABAD: Directorate General Intelligence and Investigation Inland Revenue (I&I IR) has sent a letter to Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Jehanzib Khan for issuance a notification for the rehabilitation of the directorate, it is learnt here.

Official sources told Customs Today that Director General Intelligence and Investigation Inland Revenue (I&I IR) has informed that the directorate is non-functional for the last 8 months and at least Rs370 billion revenue is hanged in 135 of tax evasion cases and requested the FBR chairman to resolve the issue in order to operationalise the directorate and avoid such huge amount of loss to national exchequer.

Sources said that FBR has prepared the summary and already sent it to cabinet for approval regarding the rehabilitation of Directorate General Intelligence and Investigation Inland Revenue (I&I IR) and expected to issue notification next week.

Sources said that Finance Act 2018 has given protection to the past actions of the Directorate General Intelligence & Investigation of Inland Revenue which would result in restoring proceedings against persons involved in sales tax evasion and cases framed under the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010 and Directorate General Intelligence & Investigation Inland Revenue would have the authority to initiate proceedings against persons involved in tax evasion.

Sources further said that due to the caretaker setup the notification was delayed; however, now the new government has established and summary is forwarded so it is expected to issue notification next week.
