TAIPEI: Today, various reports have surfaced on the web with details on the next Nexus smartphones. According to Android Police citing anonymous sources, the next generation Nexus handsets are codenamed “Marlin” and “Sailfish,” and are both being built by HTC.
Though Android Police didn’t share its sources, the codename Marlin was actually referenced by a Qualcomm engineer in an AOSP commit, hinting the device could feature a Snapdragon 820 SoC.
As for the authenticity of this rumor, Android Police has history of nailing early Nexus leaks with the Nexus 6, codenamed “Shamu” in 2014, and the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, codenamed “Angler” and “Bullhead,” respectively, in 2015. Also, worth noting that Google itself has a long history of fish-inspired device code names.
Another piece of evidence is the latest tweet by prolific smartphone leaker @evleaks who doesn’t have the code names for the upcoming Nexus phones, but mentions “M1” and “S1” which are in line with the other report.
