HONG KONG: Hong Kong stocks climbed at the start of trading on Friday, with the Hang Seng Index adding 1.3% while the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.2%.
Banks posted broad-based gains, with index heavyweight HSBC Holdigns plc 0005, +1.39% rising 1%. Among mainland Chinese banks, China Merchants Bank Co., Ltd. 3968, +0.46% CIHHF, +4.09% climbed 2.1%, Agricultural Bank of China Ltd. 1288, +1.35% ACGBF, +1.84% moved up 1.6%, and China Citic Bank Corporation Ltd. 0998, +0.00% CHCJY, +3.75% headed higher 1.2%. Tech stocks advanced, with online major Tencent Holdings Ltd. 0700, +3.49% TCTZF, +5.61% surging 4%. Online game developer Baioo Family Interactive Ltd. 2100, +3.23% jumped 3.2%, software developer Kingsoft Corp. Ltd. 3888, +2.12% KSFTF, -2.13% gained 2.8%, and rival Kingdee International Software Group Co. Ltd. 0268, -0.43% traded 0.9% higher. Energy names were mixed, as PetroChina Co. Ltd. 0857, -1.19% declined 2.3%, Cnooc Ltd. 0883, +0.59% dropped 0.4%, while China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation 0386, +0.66% edged up 0.2%. Over on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, -0.48% slipped 0.2%.
