DHAKA: Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina projected her country to be a prosperous one in 2041 when per capital income in the South Asian country would be nearly 12,000 US dollars. The Prime Minister, who also set a target of turning the impoverished country to middle-income one by 2021, made the remarks in a scripted answer to the question in parliament that came for Wednesday’s business. The question-answer session dropped to accommodate budget debate, but the documents were tabled as it is now public document. Hasina who assumed office in 2009 for the second term set the target of turning Bangladesh into a middle-income nation by 2021 with multi-pronged initiatives, most notably her campaign for Digital Bangladesh. The country has graduated to lower-middle income state.
According to government statistics, the per capita income in Bangladesh will increase to more than $1,600 next financial year as it is now $1,598. Responding to a question from treasury bench member Didarul Alam of Chittagong-4 constituency, Prime Minister Hasina said the size of Bangladesh economy will be $2.5 trillion dollar by 2041. She said four private economic zones were given final licenses to set up industries while ten others were given pre-qualification licenses. The Kaliakoir Hi-tech Park is being constructed with a target to arrange employment for one million people in IT sector by 2021, she added.
Bangladesh would be the centre point the economy of Asia region by 2041 and play a remarkable role in local supply chain and global value chain as well as establishing regional sub-regional communication and connectivity, said Hasina. She hoped that the open economic policy of the present government would open up a new era of success through creating a win-win situation in the areas of trade, commerce and investment at regional, sub-regional and international level. The Prime Minister said Bangladesh would be the world’s 29th largest economy by 2030 and 23rd by 2050 from 31st at present.
