COLOMBO: Floods and mudslides, resulted from torrential rains over most parts in the country for the past two weeks, have killed at least 39 people while affecting over 1.1 million people, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) report says.
According to the DMC report released on as of January 01, 2015 two people are still missing and at least another 20 have been injured.
Another 50,832 people from 14,472 families are still in 363 shelters across the island while 1.12 million people are affected by the floods and landslides.
The DMC says floods are receding and situation has been normalized in North Central Province while cooked meals are being provided through the District Secretariats to the affected people in safe locations.
The floods have also destroyed several thousand acres of paddy lands in the Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa districts.
The Meteorology Department forecasts morning showers in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts and afternoon or evening showers for the Uva and Eastern provinces for tomorrow.
