KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is mulling over to withdraw tax exemptions and concessions being giving to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), religious and welfare organizations, in upcoming fiscal budget 2015-16 through Statutory Regulatory Orders (SROs).
Sources informed Customs Today that all field formation collectorates have submitted their proposals and recommendations in which they suggested the FBR to withdraw the tax exemptions providing to NGOs, welfare and religious organizations on import of consignments including machinery, pharmaceuticals and other equipments as the duty/taxes evasion through mis-declaration and under-invoicing had been witnessed while scrutinizing the post clearance data of the NGOs and other welfare organizations.
Sources further said that the FBR has also asked the customs to provide the details of the consignments imported by NGOs and welfare organizations during the fiscal years 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 after which FBR would decide regarding the eliminations of tax exemptions.
They informed that the FBR has also asked for recommendations and suggestions from the field formation collectorates across the country over tax exemptions providing to various sectors.
Sources further said that the FBR will take final decision in this regard after getting response from all field formation collectorates over the said issue.
It is pertinent to mention here that tax evasion cases on NGOs letters have been detected during clearance of the consignments in the previous years.
