ISLAMABAD: Dr Muhammad Irshad, a BS-22 officer of Inland Revenue Service, Thursday assumed the look-after charge of the post of FBR chairman.
The officer, in pursuance of Board’s Notification No. 0209-IR-I/2017, dated 18.01.2017, took the look-after charge of the post at FBR headquarters, Islamabad.
Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has assigned the charge of acting chairman of FBR to Dr Irshad, who is the senior-most official of FBR and currently posted as Member (Inland Revenue-Operations).
Dr Irshad will look after the work of FBR chairman in addition to his own duties as FBR member.
According to the sources, the post of new chairman will be filled with the official who possessed at least one-year tenure before his retirement for ensuring continuity of the financial policies.
It has also been decided that no outsider will be appointed as FBR chairman as efforts were made earlier to get the new chairman from DMG. The new chairman will be appointed within the fold of the tax machinery. The retired chairman Nisar Khan belonged to Customs group so it is expectation within the IRS that the new chairman this time will be selected from their ranks.
In grade 22 among the top officers of Inland Revenue Service (IRS) included Dr Irshad, Chaudhry Safdar and Rana Seerat, who will be retiring during 2017. Other two top officials, Khawaja Tanvir and Rehmatullah Wazir, belong to Inland Revenue Service and are in Grade 21. Both the officials are among the top contenders in this race and one of them may be appointed on this position.
