TOKYO: Disgraced stem cell scientist Haruko Obokata has failed to produce so-called STAP cells, in experiments at Riken. officials at the research institute and other sources said Thursday, casting further doubt on her claims.
Apart from Obokata’s tests, a RIKEN team also failed in reproducing STAP cells. RIKEN has decided to stop tests conducted by both Obokata and the team. In the end, the government-backed research institute failed to prove the existence of STAP cells though it had insisted to pursue the possibility to reproduce them even after scandals over articles on the cells.
According to the sources, RIKEN executives confirmed the institute’s policy to discontinue the tests at a meeting on Thursday. The institute will hold a press conference on Friday in Tokyo. Obokata will not attend it.
