KARACHI: The Customs authorities have started investigations into a currency bag which was found from the Customs House branch of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP).
According to the details, an unclaimed bag full of currency notes was found by the customs officers at the National Bank after which an investigation team was constituted to investigate the matter.
The sources informed Customs Today that it seemed to be corruption money, but the suspect failed to shift it from the bank. Initial investigations reveal the cameras of the bank were also not active at the time the attempt was being made to transfer the money from the bank.
The fact finding team looking after the case comprises five officers, three from Karachi, one from Lahore and one from Multan. The team will submit its report to the higher authorities till March 20. The team is tasked with investigating owner of the money and its destination.
The fact finding team has started investigation with the branch staff regarding the bag of currency notes while four officials of the bank, including Branch Manager Altaf Shah and Operation Manager Sohail Kamran Bhatti have been suspended from their posts.
It is pertinent to mention that the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) branch in Customs House is responsible for collecting 70 percent customs duties and taxes.
