WASHINGTON: More than 1,000 pairs of shoes and almost 700 items of clothing violating trademark law were seized by customs officers in Nicosia and Larnaca on Tuesday, an official statement said. During investigation in two establishments in Nicosia and three in Larnaca, all owned by the same company, officers found shoes worth approximately €4,000 that appeared to carry the Adidas logo illegally. They continue to investigate the case.
Also on Tuesday, customs officials at the Ayios Dometios crossing point in Nicosia, discovered clothes with the Adidas and Nike logos worth around €4,000 in a car driven by a Turkish Cypriot woman. The woman admitted the clothes were fakes from the Turkish-held north of Cyprus and police seized the clothes and her car. The customs department chief then accepted a request for an out-of-court settlement of the offences. The woman paid €1,000 for the clothes and €500 to get her car back before being released.
