WELLINGTON: Customs has thrown $1 million behind new laser scanners that will allow staff to check packages without opening them.
Customs Minister Nicky Wagner on Wednesday announced the department would be deploying 14 new mobile devices that will let staff check parcels almost instantly against an upgradeable database of 11,000 illicit substances.
The “FirstDefenders” come at a total cost of $977,000 and will be used in 12 places across the country, including most major centres.
“These devices will be a fundamental piece of equipment for frontline officers,” Ms Wagner said.
