ISLAMABAD: The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation of the Federal Board of Revenue has seized 146 non-duty paid LEDs worth Rs 4.2 million.
According to the details, the Customs I&I staff, in pursuance of information, intercepted a Mazda mini-truck bearing registration no LES -14-986 coming from Peshawar near Chandni Chowk Taxila.
A thorough search of the truck was conducted in the presence of witnesses and the driver. During the search, the anti-smuggling staff recovered foreign origin Sony Bravia Ultra HD TV 42 inch, Samsung slim LED TV 42 inch HD 4-k series, Sony Bravia curved LED Digital color slim TV 32 inch, Sony Bravia 32/HX 1200 LED, Samsung A+Panel full HD 4-K 55 inch, Samsung LED 3D series 14-14000 Smart TV 52 inch, 6, Sony Bravia LED digital A+Panel slim 55 inch, Sony Braiva smart LED D Color 46 inch 20 numbers, Samsung curved HD global LED 46 inch 9 numbers, Sony Bravia A+Panel LED 32 inch 32/X1000 06 and Samsung curved LED 32 inch series 9-32J9000.
During questioning, both the accused claimed the ownership of the recovered foreign origin LEDs but on demand they failed to produce any evidence regarding legal import or lawful possession of the goods.
The anti-smuggling staff seized the goods and Mazda truck under section 168 of the Customs Act 1969. The accused person have also been placed under arrest. An FIR has been lodged and further investigation is underway.
Sources said that the FBR has directed the customs authorities to take every possible measure to curb smuggling in the region.
