LAHORE: The Pakistan Customs has burnt drugs, smuggled goods and smashed thousands of bottles of alcohol at Wagah border on the International Customs Day.
The day is celebrated on January 26 every year under the World Customs Organization.
Pakistan Customs Central Region Chief Collector Rozi Khan Burki, Collector Preventive Lahore Mukaram Jah Ansari, Collector Customs Multan Sarfraz Ahmad Warraich, Collector Customs Appraisement Lahore Muhammad Sadiq, the officials of Punjab Rangers and other staff attended the ceremony.
Narcotics and other drugs burned on Wagha border includes 6729 bottles of alcohol which was smuggled through different routes including from India. Indian made and other branded alcohol was also burnt there. 7.5 kg heroin was also burnt. Other items burnt at Wagha border includes 8000 packets of smuggled cigarettes, 94 packs of fire crackers, 120,000 packets of Indian made pan parag and chemical as well.
Central Region Chief Collector Rozi Khan Burki burnt the drugs publicly while the bottles of liquor, banned medicines and a large quantity of expired soft drinks were destroyed with the help of a bulldozer.
Talking to media persons, Rozi Khan Burki said that the Pakistan Customs was struggling to control the flow of hazardous items to Pakistan.
He added that destruction of drugs, liquor, and smuggled items was a clear gesture that there is no space in Pakistan for such items.
The other items destroyed in destruction session were pan prag Indian, soaps, black tea, poppy seeds, disposable injectors, cigarettes, chemical boxes, assorted medicine, horse diet, obscene calendars, packing material, betel leaves, expired dates, ruff papers, stcikers, juices, milk, chemical small Indian film posters, plastic parts, CD films, SIM cards, USBs, sticker papers, books etc.
