KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Syed Mehmood Khan son of Syed Abdullah and Saleem Shah son of Muhammad Rafique to Central Jail Karachi on judicial remand, who were involved in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband betel nuts and others goods.
On Wednesday, Investigation Officer of Customs Collectorate of Preventive produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that officials of Pakistan Rangers intercepted five Suzuki pick-ups loaded with betel nuts and other goods at Maripure Road Karachi and informed the customs officials who reached there and searched the pick-ups.
Investigation officer further informed the court that during the search of pick-ups, the customs officials found 12kg betel nuts, 72,6750 pouches Rajni brand of Indian-origin gutkha. After the legal formalities, the customs team seized the above-mentioned goods along with five pick-ups.
He further submitted that show-cause notices were issued and displayed on customs office against owners of vehicles as well as owners of said goods, accordingly, efforts are in progress to arrest the absconding accused persons and their associates.
The case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause 8 & 89 of section 156 (1) ibid read with section (i) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950 and others related laws.
