KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi sent a suspect, Khuram Ali Raza, to Customs Department on physical remand on Thursday, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle 116 foreign origin mobile phones from Korea to Karachi via Doha by Qatar Airline.
During the hearing, investigation officer produced the suspect before the court and informed that the suspect arrived at Jinnah International Airport Karachi from Korea via Doha by Qatar Airline who was intercepted by IPS Green Channel and was asked to declare whether he was carrying any contraband goods in his baggage or on his person, which, he denied.
The investigation officer further informed that during the search, customs officials recovered 51 LG mobile phones, 09 I-phone, 07 Huawei mobile phones, 45 Samsung mobile phones and 04 Samsung mobile phones valuing to Rs1,322,400 from his baggage, therefore, after the formalities, he was arrested and said goods were seized by customs authorities.
He requested the court that prosecution needs further investigation from him, therefore, court may send him to customs department on physical remand, after the hearing, court sent him to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to complete investigation within 14 days submit progress report along with suspect on next date of hearing.
Case was registered against him and other yet to be ascertained for violation of section 2 (s), 16 & 139 of the customs act, punishable under clauses (8) (89) & (70) of section 156 (i) ibid, read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666(I)/2006, dated 28.06,2006 & section 3 (iii) of import & export (control) act, 1950.
