KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspects namely Amanullah son of Faiz Ullah and Saifullah son of Faizal Kareem and sent them back to customs lock-up, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 6360 kilograms betel nuts.
On June 19, 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive NMB Wharf, Karachi produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on an actionable information, customs team intercepted a new Prince Coach (EURO-3) bearing registration no BSB-842 and recovered 6360 kgs betel nuts worth Rs 3,180,000.
He further submitted that after failure to produce any lawful documents, customs officials seized goods and suspects were also taken into customs custody. He submitted that prosecution needs further physical remand for arrest of financiers, abettors and others including owner of impugned goods, therefore, court may send them back on physical remand.
After the hearing court remanded them back and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered at the office of Anti-Smuggling Organization HQ NMB Wharf, Karachi for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of customs act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the customs act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
