KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Muhammad Akbar son of Lajwar and Naqeel Ullah son of Muhammad Hanifa, who are involved in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 14000 kilogram betel nuts, to customs lock-up on physical remand.
On August 17, 2018, investigation officer produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on credible information, a team of customs officials intercepted a Hino High Wall truck bearing registration no TKD-957 carrying non-duty paid betel nuts concealed under the load of gravel (crushed stores) and was coming from Quetta for delivery at Karachi.
He informed the court that during the search, accused were asked to produce documents of the above mentioned goods, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents of betel nuts, therefore, after the formalities, customs officials seized the above mentioned goods and suspects were also taken into custody.
Investigation officer said that prosecution needs further investigation from said accused therefore, court may send them back to customs department on physical remand. After the hearing, court granted his request and sent them back to customs department on physical remand, The court also directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
