KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspects namely Samiullah son of Muhammad Ishaq, Ziaduddin son of Roziuddin and Najeed Ullah son of Muhammad Yousaf and sent them to customs department, who were involved in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 3560 kilograms betel nuts valuing Rs707,728.
On April 20, 2019, investigation officer produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that customs officials intercepted Hino mini truck bearing registration no: MNO-7288 Model 1990 and recovered 106 bags assorted size and weight containing total 3560 kilograms foreign origin betel nuts valuing Rs707.728.
He submitted that during the search, suspects failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, goods along with truck were seized and suspects also were arrested by customs team.
He argued that prosecution needs further investigation, therefore court may send them on physical remand. After the hearing, court sent them to physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2(s) 156(2) 157(2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clause (8) (89) of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (i) of Imports and Export Control Act, 1950.
