KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Moula Bux, Shahnawaz and Tarique Hussain to customs lock-up on physical remand, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 4700 kilograms betel nuts, Indian origin gutkha, Indian origin medicines of different kinds.
On January 11, 2019, investigation officer of ASO produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on actionable information, a bus bearing registration no BSB-77 loaded with huge quantity of Indian origin/ smuggled goods, the staff of ASO took possession of the said bus along with three persons and brought the same to customs office.
He submitted that during the search, 4700 kilograms betel nuts, valuing Rs9,40,000, 167 packets Z-21 Indian origin gutkha valuing Rs1,90,000 and 140 packets Safina Indian origin gutkha valuing Rs1,59,000 and thousands packets of Indian origin medicines of different kinds namely Relief Extra tablets, Citriz tablets, Cobra tablets and Zanitic tablets from their possession.
He argued that prosecution needs further investigations from them, therefore, court may send them on physical remand, after the hearing, court approved their physical remand and directed investigation officer to complete investigations and produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
Case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 16 & 157 of the Customs Act, 1969 read with Section (1) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950 further read with SRO 499(1)2009 dated 1/06/2009 and SRO 566(1)/2009 and other related laws.
