KARACHI: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigations (I&I) team along with other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) beefed up surveillance against smuggling of betel buts.
According to the details, on 12.1.2018, huge quantity of smuggled Indian origin betel nuts consignments apprehended by the team of Customs and law enforcement agencies during the current month in different raids.
Recently City District Police on the secret information intercepted a container carrier vehicle and conducted a raid near Kharadar during which 135 sacks of Indian origin smuggled betel nuts were recovered. These sacks of Indian origin smuggled betel nuts weighing 11000 kilograms along with several tyres worth millions of rupees were hundred over to the Customs authorities for further investigation. During the raids, two culprits with container contractor were also busted. Smuggled goods were supplied to Karachi from Balochistan.
On the other hand, the officers of the Pakistan Rangers Sindh deputed at Sindh and Balochistan border area intercepted a vehicle at Abdul Jabbar Shaheed check post and recovered 18590Kgs of smuggled betel nuts which were kept in 286 sacks. During the raid, two culprits Rahmatullah and driver of the vehicle Abdul Wali were also busted.
All the recovered 29592 kilograms of betel nuts, tyres as well as apprehended four culprits were handed over to the Customs for the further investigation. Whereas raids are being conducted to arrest the master mind involved in the heinous crime of smuggling.
