CHITTAGONG: Customs intelligence officers in Chittagong have confiscated two Mercedes cars from a workshop.
Assistant Director Muhammad Tarek Mahmud said the cars– an SUV and a sedan– were seized late on Wednesday at the port city’s Muradnagar.
The vehicles were brought to Bangladesh using the ‘Carnet de Passage’ facility that allows tourists to enter one country from another with their vehicles without paying duties for certain period of time.
Duty has to be paid if they are not taken out of the country after the facility expires.
The seizures were made after Bangladesh Road Transport Authority confirmed that the car’s documents were forged, said Customs officer Mahmud.
He said the estimated price of the cars, including the duty, would be around Tk45 million.
One Muhammad Mansur Ali brought the SUV in 2011 while the sedan in 2010 by one Ashraful Alam. Both of the vehicles came from the UK, added Mahmud.
