MADRID: The amount of contraband tobacco from Gibraltar in Spain has nearly doubled in the last year, according to a study carried out by IPSOS, and commissioned by the Spanish tobacco company Altadis.
The study was based on the identification of discarded cigarette packets across Spain. At the third National Anti-Smuggling Congress in Madrid, the statistics were made public, and revealed that just over ten percent of the tobacco consumed in Spain was contraband tobacco.
Of this, Altadis claims over thirty percent was from Gibraltar, a rise from last year’s statistic of sixteen and a half percent.
