KARACHI: As many as 315 contractual employees of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) have not been paid salaries for the last six months.
Sources said that only the Ministry of Industries and Production (MoI&P) could help contractual employees by confirming their jobs. They said that the MoI&P had sought Prime Minister’s permission to extend the contract of the PSM contractual employees for one year, on the plea that its 2,669 permanent employees will retire in coming 2-3 years. The numbers of employees attaining the age of superannuation in 2014-15 equals to 609 officers and 1193 workers.
Most of the employees have no other means of income and their children are forced to sleep without having even a single meal in a day. One of the employees has died of heart attack two days before, leaving six children and a widow behind. The deceased has been waiting for his confirmation letter for the last six months as he has been working in PSM for eight years.
This not a story of one employee of the country’s largest steel mills, every employee is suffering from this situation.
