ABU DHABI: The woman veterinarian will have to pay Dh50,000 fine and will be deported after the jail term. The Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday sentenced a 53-year-old Portuguese woman veterinarian to seven years in jail followed by deportation and fined her Dh50,000 for importing 380 psychotropic drugs.
The incident happened in May this year when a Dubai Customs inspector working at the Cargo Village at the Dubai airports, who was on duty, suspected a parcel coming from Portugal. When the officer subjected the package to X-ray screening, a good number of strips of mind-altering drugs, listed in the narcotic drugs table, were detected. The cargo was handed over to the customs police, who called the Portuguese veterinarian.
The Public Prosecution accused the woman of importing narcotic drugs and referred her to the court which found her guilty.
