TAIPEI: The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) arrested four Taiwanese men at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport for trying to smuggle 9.216 kilograms of ketamine into the country from Malaysia.
The men were found with the drugs strapped to their stomach and lower legs at a customs check at the airport, the CIB told reporters on Sunday. After investigating the activities of the alleged criminal ring, police identified four suspects who have frequently traveled to and from Southeast Asian countries over the past few years, Wang said.
The four flew to Malaysia on Dec. 14 and were believed to be planning to smuggle drugs into Taiwan. Police officers were waiting when they arrived at Taoyuan airport Saturday night, Wang noted.
During interrogations, the four men confessed they took the job because they had debts and received up to NT$100,000 (US$3,335) per trip, according to the CIB.
The suspects were taken to Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office for violations of the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
