NEW YORK: Amazon’s Fire TV platform just got a lot more competitive with Roku and Apple TV because the $100 Fire TV box now has the HBO Go app. Amazon says the wildly popular $40 Fire TV stick will get the app in spring 2015.
Amazon promised to add HBO Go in the end of 2015, and it has delivered.
As with HBO Go on other devices, such as Roku, Apple TV, Chrome cast, Xbox and Playstation, users will need to be an HBO subscriber via their existing cable company to get the service.
Amazon’s press release says the service is available through “participating affiliates,” but at this point it’s unclear whether some services will block it, as Comcast does with HBO Go on Roku.
In a quick test using our in-house Fire TV box and Verizon Fios’ service, the app seemed to work fine.
